IPSY September 2017

The theme for IPSY this month was “Like a Boss” which I thought was really interesting. The bag this month was black with royal blue on the inside, and a rough texture on the outside. I actually really like it, and it’s one of the only bags that I can actually see myself using outside as something other than a makeup bag.

The first item I got was some type of snail secretion that’s supposed to do something for your face. To be honest, I’m still not exactly sure what it is. Either way, I don’t think I would ever use this product since I found out that it contains snail secretion. I’m sure it’s probably great, but personally, I just can’t.

The second product I got was Smashbox Photo Finish Radiance Primer. I was really excited when I got this because I heard such good things about Smashbox primers, but this one had a tint to it. I don’t know how to describe it. I just feel like it won’t look good on my pale skin.

I also got the Elizabeth Mott eyeshadow in Gunmetal. It’s the second product that I’ve received from them (the first one was a highlighter), and I loved the first one. I’m just not sure that I’ll like the shade of this eyeshadow. I prefer gold eyeshadow to silver. The fourth item I got was an angled shading brush from Luxie. This is another product that I probably would have liked if it was a different type of brush. I just don’t use angled brushes.

Last, I got a blush duo from Pixi in Peach Honey. I am absolutely in love with this brush. The colors are absolutely beautiful, and I think that it will look great on my pale skin. It also has a little bit of shimmer to it which would be nice if I’m not wearing a highlighter that day but still would like a little bit of shimmer.

Overall, I’d give this bag about a 3 out of five. I love the bag and the blush duo, but that’s really all that I can see myself using.

Too Faced Peaches and Cream First Impressions

So, as you’ve probably seen from my September beauty wishlist, I was incredibly excited when I found out that Too Faced was coming out with another collection based on peaches. Let me just say, I absolutely love everything having to do with peaches! I love the smell of peaches, I love the taste of peaches, and I love peach makeup, so I absolutely had to get some of the collection. This is what I got!

Primed and Peachy

I have never actually bought a Too Faced primer. I did get their Hangover primer as a sample, though, and really liked it, so I decided to try out this one. It has the same smell as the rest of the collection which is amazing. You can definitely smell peaches like the other collection, but it’s not nearly as strong as the other one because the cream mixed in tones it down. When I tried it out on my hand, it blurred everything out perfectly, so I think that it will be great on my face.

Peach Perfect Comfort Matte Foundation in Snow

I was actually kind of disappointed with this one. I got the lightest shade which works for me in their Born This Way Foundation, but this one was too dark for my skin tone. I was so disappointed because I was really looking forward to this one. I’m sure if you’re not really pale like me, though, it will work great!

Peach My Cheeks Blush in Peach Dream

I really like this so far. It’s pretty pigmented which is nice. It’s also a beautiful pale pink which I think will look awesome on my pale skin during the winter. The formula is supposed to be new. It’s really interesting because it feels creamy when you swirl your finger in it, but when it’s on your finger, it’s more powdery. They also have a highlighter and bronzer in this formula which I didn’t get.

Peach Kiss in Drunk Dial

I absolutely LOVE the look of this lipstick! The actual lipstick has peaches engraved on the sides which is so adorable!! The color itself is a really pretty berry tone which is so perfect for fall!

Just Peachy Mattes

I personally believe this is a great palette for travel since it’s all mattes, is small, and has a big mirror. The feel like the colors could be really pretty for fall, but they could also be used for all other seasons by showing casing certain colors. Plus, it smells great, but it’s not too overpowering like the Sweet Peach palette can be.

Best Drugstore Makeup Brands for Beginners

When I first started doing my makeup, I was a bit overwhelmed at all of the different brands. I had absolutely no idea which products were good, which ones were bad, or even which ones were drugstore makeup brands versus higher end. SO….if you happen to be in the same position as I was in then, here are a few of my absolute favorite drugstore makeup brands and some of the products I love from each one.

  1. Maybelline: Maybelline just always seems pretty reliable when it comes to finding and trying out new makeup. I really haven’t found a lot from there that I just absolutely hate. Maybelline has some really great concealers, including the Fit Me and the Instant Age Rewind Under Eye concealers. They also have good everyday mascaras. My personal favorite is the Lash Sensational mascara.
  2. Rimmel: I’m a big fan of Rimmel mainly because they have really good drugstore foundations. I use the Lasting Finish 25 hour foundation which definitely lasts all day (not really sure about 25 hours, though, since I take my makeup off at night). I also love that it has a foundation light enough for my pale skin. Recently, I bought their setting powder which is also really great.
  3. L’Oreal: This is probably my absolute favorite drugstore brand simply because they do so, so many products right. If I had to recommend one, it would probably be this one. Their foundations are light enough for my pale skin, they make my absolute favorite mascara as of now (Lash Paradise), and I’ve heard their lip liners and lipsticks are really great.
  4. Physician’s Formula: This one is kind of the higher end of drugstore makeup. Because of that, I’ve just started trying it out, but so far I really like the brand as a whole. My favorite is their Butter Bronzer which is so creamy and smells like coconut.

L’Oreal True Match Foundation Review

This is going to be a fairly quick and simple post. I just wanted to do a quick review on the foundation that I’ve been using the most this summer. By far, it’s been my go-to foundation for about two months now (and not only because it’s one of the only foundations I have that match my skin tone right now lol).

Pros:

  • It comes in a lot of different shades, including one light enough for my skin tone.
  • It’s so easy to blend out.
  • It’s medium coverage, but you can build it to full coverage easily.
  • It does not settle into the lines of my face.
  • It has SPF 17 which is so nice for my pale skin!

Cons:

  • You definitely need to use a setting spray if you want it to last longer than about five hours.

Overall, I’d give this foundation four out of five stars. To me, it’s perfect for the summer months, and I can definitely see this being my favorite for more months to come!

July Favorites!!

This month has been incredibly fast paced and interesting. I got back from New Zealand at the end of June, so this was my first month back in America. I also decided to start a YouTube channel which has been incredibly exciting, scary, fun, and (I’ll admit) frustrating. It has been so refreshing to feel like I’m actually taking a step to where I want to be in life while sharing with everyone the topics I feel most passionate and excited by! Click HERE if you would like to check it out! I got back to writing regularly on my blog again too which has been so nice, and I’m so glad you guys are taking the time to read what I’m putting out! Thank you so much!!

Anyway….back to my favorites of the month!

First up are some hair products that have really made a difference in the health of my hair. I really didn’t realize how much so until I lost them at the end of my New Zealand trip and had to deal with my hair without them for a week or so. They are the Garnier Fructis Leave in Conditioner and the Tresemme Heat Protecting Spray.

I use the heat protecting spray every time I straighten my hair, and it makes such a difference in how frizzy and dry my hair is. If I don’t use it once, I feel like I end up spending the next few weeks trying out different products and working with my hair to try and get it back to the way it was. The Ganier leave in conditioner I use in my hair right before I dry it. This is one of the products I use way more often when I’m trying to get my hair back to normal. I can definitely tell a difference in how dry and frizzy my hair is after I dry it. It’s also much smoother and shinier.

Next up we have makeup! First is the Elizabeth Mott Highlighter. I first tried this out when I got it in my IPSY bag a month or so ago. I liked it so much that I ended up buying it. For me, this is the perfect highlighter for the summer months because it’s very subtle and pretty on the skin. I really don’t like bright, sparkly highlighters when it’s really hot because I feel like it emphasizes the sweat already making my face look shiny.

Then we have the Milani Setting Spray. I got this after I heard (I believe) Kathleen Lights talked about how much she liked this. Like I said, because it’s been so hot lately, I really needed a good setting spray to keep my makeup on my face instead of melting off. This definitely got the job done. It made my makeup last all day even in the heat, and my makeup looked like I just put it on all day.

Last is the L’Oreal Voluminous Lash Paradise Mascara. I’m not going to say too much about this because it seems like everyone is talking about it lately. I’ll just say that it is absolutely hands down the best mascara I have tried lately. I think that it even beats the Too Faced Better Than Sex Mascara which has been my all time favorite mascara. Unlike the Too Faced one, it doesn’t have fall out under my eyes if I wear it for a long time, and my lashed stay full, long, and curled throughout the day.

That’s all for this month! If you would like to see more, check out my June favorites video HERE! I would love for you to let me know what you’ve been loving this month in the comments!!

Colourpop Nail Polish and Crystal Collection

Along with the Fem Rosa collection, I decided to try out some of the other new collections Colourpop has come out with recently. I was really excited to see that Colourpop was expanding and coming out with nail polish, so of course I bought two of them to try out (Pixi-lated and First Wings First). The other collection I decided to try out was the Crystal Collection, but unfortunately most of the collection was sold out by the time I ordered everything so I only got the rose quartz lip balm.

First up is the nail polish. I used Pixi-lated (which is the blue-ish color) on my toenails, and I tried out First Wings First on my finger nails.

Pros:

  • The packaging and names are really cute!
  • They have a good range of colors for the first release from a sparkly silver to light pink to teal.
  • They are really pigmented which is something Colourpop as a whole does really well.

Cons:

  • The colors seem more spring-y than summer-y which is kind of disappointing since they released them in the summer.
  • The nail polish dries really quickly which means it starts clumping when you’re still painting the nail.
  • There doesn’t seem to be a lot of product compared to the other nail polishes I have. Especially when the price with shipping isn’t that much cheaper than (what I think are better) nail polishes.

IMG_6512.JPG

Next we have the rose quartz lip balm from the crystal collection. I think the idea behind this collection is so neat! They have a video on their YouTube channel explaining about the different crystals used in their products and the different energies they’re supposed to represent.

Pros:

  • The idea behind the collection is so cute and interesting.
  • It looks really good over lipstick to give it another dimension.
  • It smells good!
  • It makes their matte lipstick feel more moisturizing.
  • It has a really pretty sparkly, pink-y sheen when the light hits it.

Cons:

  • Most of the collection is already sold out….
  • The lip balm has enough pigment in it to look way too light on my pale skin.
  • The box it came in was really cute, but the actual tube packaging is just bland.

Colourpop Fem Rosa Collection

I finally got the fem rosa collection! When it first came out, I bought the lip bundle, but the palette sold out really quickly (as I’m sure the new concealers and brushes will :/ ). I was really disappointed because I loved the look of the palette. It looked perfect for a transition palette between summer and fall-y colors. Luckily they restocked it fairly quickly, and I just got it in! The only thing that I did not get from the collection was the face palette since it looked really dark for my skin tone.

We’ll start off with the lip bundle which contains two satin liquid lipsticks (Mrs. and Darling) and one glossy lip which is Contessa. I was really happy they made the lipsticks in the satin formula because I love the colors, and I’m not too fond of Colourpop’s matte formula. It just feels too drying on my lips.

Contessa.png

Pros:

  • Beautiful transition colors from summer to fall
  • Feel comfortable on the lips
  • Very pigmented
  • The satins are not streaky (even though Darling kind of looks like it in the picture, my fault)
  • I feel like the colors would look pretty on multiple skin tones (especially darker skin tones)
  • Beautiful packaging!! (love the rose gold rose on the tube!)

Cons:

  • I had a hard time getting them to come off my hand when I swatched them after they dried.

The “She” palette is by far my favorite out of the collection, though, the colors are absolutely beautiful! They have four matte shades (my favorites), seven metallic shades, and one satin shade. Like I said about the lip bundle, they’re perfect for the summer-fall transition.

Chick.png

Pros:

  • All of the colors are highly pigmented
  • The metallic shades are not too sparkly and much more pigmented
  • You can get multiple looks out of the palette
  • There are beautiful matte shades for the crease
  • It’s small enough to take in a travel bag
  • The lid is magnetic so it won’t open easily when thrown into a makeup bag
  • The shadows are a good size
  • The rose packaging is beautiful!!

Cons (or minor inconveniences, really):

  • The names are on the back instead of with the shadows
  • There is not a mirror
  • I would have liked more darker shades to use as a liner
